Synopsis

In 19th-century Russia, Gerasim, a huge, deafmute peasant, lives a simple and peaceful life working in the fields around his native village. One day the mistress of the estate, impressed by Gerasim's great strength, brings him to her Moscow mansion and makes him a porter. Though he intensely dislikes the life of the city, he falls in love with Tatyana, a laundress as unhappy as himself, and becomes her adoring protector. But once again the capricious mistress intervenes, this time forcing Tatyana to marry Kapiton, a drunken shoemaker. Gerasim's life becomes more lonely than ever until one day he finds a starved, half-frozen puppy by the riverside. Choosing a sound he is able to articulate, he names her Mumu and tenderly nurses her back to health. As the days pass, Gerasim lavishes all of his love upon the little dog. But the peasant's happiness comes to an abrupt end when Mumu snarls at the mistress, and she orders the dog destroyed. Gerasim rows out to the middle of the river with Mumu and drowns her. Then, turning his back on the mansion, he begins the long walk back to the village of his childhood.
