Synopsis
Nurdin, the son of the omnipotent Temir Khan, is in love with Cholpon [Morning Star], though her poverty is a barrier to their love. Ayday, an evil, 100-year-old sorceress whose kiss turns men to stone, tries to separate them. Temir Khan arranges for Nurdin to choose a bride from among five well-born beauties, but none sways him from his love for Cholpon. Suddenly Ayday appears, transformed into a young woman of extraordinary beauty, and tempts Nurdin. He is on the point of drinking her love potion when Cholpon appears. He affirms his love for her and asks his father's blessing on his choice. Temir Khan, enraged that his son would choose a low-born bride, has the lovers thrown into the well of death. They remain true lovers in the underground kingdom, but one day Cholpon awakens to find Nurdin gone. The fear of losing her beloved gives Cholpon strength, and in a struggle with Ayday's servant she wrests away Ayday's magic scarf. In Ayday's lair, Cholpon tears the scarf, saving Nurdin from death. Ayday and her servant are turned to stone, and Nurdin and Cholpon celebrate their wedding.
