Synopsis

Ivan, a simple-minded youth, acquires two fine black steeds and a little humpbacked horse who brings good luck. Ivan's two older brothers steal the steeds and take them to the King, but, since only Ivan can control the steeds, he becomes the King's chief groom. The King falls in love with the fairytale Queen Maiden and commands Ivan on pain of death to bring her to him. With the help of the little humpbacked horse, Ivan finds the Queen Maiden, who lives beneath the sea, and captures her. Repulsed by the portly old King, she demands that a ruby ring be brought from the bottom of the sea before she will agree to the marriage. Ivan is again commanded to accomplish the task, and again his little horse helps him to succeed. The Queen Maiden finally insists that the King must bathe in boiling water before the wedding in order to become young and handsome. The King orders Ivan to test the bath, and with the help of the magic horse, he emerges extraordinarily handsome. The King dives into the water in turn and is killed. Ivan and the Queen Maiden then wed.
