Synopsis

In occupied Kiev, in 1942, the Nazis, endeavoring to gain a propaganda victory, arrange a soccer match between a German team and a Soviet team gathered with difficulty from among the prisoners of war. The Soviet athletes are permitted to move freely about the city; but they are confronted with a choice between defeat on the playing field or death. As the time for the match arrives, they see the people of the city gathered to watch them. Inspired by the sight of their compatriots, the Soviet athletes defeat the German team and are then led away to face a firing squad.
