Synopsis

Golokhvostyy, a Kiev barber with a reputation as a fop and a dandy, loses his barbershop at cards. To remedy his finances he sets out to marry into wealth, and to this end he courts Pronya Serko, who has set her hopes on marrying a man of fashion and believes Golokhvostyy to be her dream come true. Golokhvostyy is meanwhile attracted to the modest and beautiful Galya, and he vacillates between the interests of his pocketbook and his heart. Golokhvostyy's trifling is finally his undoing, however. He is disgraced and, while making his departure, receives a sound beating.
