Synopsis

A landscape painter from St. Petersburg spends his summer at the country estate of Belokurov. On the neighboring manor Misyus and her older sister, Lidiya, live with their mother. The artist is captivated by Misyus' youthful innocence, her spontaneity and blossoming womanhood, and they fall in love. The family is dominated by Lidiya, who teaches school and devotes herself to charitable projects for the peasants. The artist argues with Lidiya that charity will not help the peasants but instead worsen their condition; and he calls for a new order as Russia's only salvation. Lidiya detests the artist, whom she views as an idler, and she sends her sister and mother away to an aunt's house. When the artist arrives to propose to Misyus, she has already departed, and years later he remains haunted by her memory.
