Synopsis

In the Crimea at the turn of the century, Zheltkov, a poor clerk, falls hopelessly in love with the elegant and beautiful Princess Vera. He follows her everywhere--to concerts, to museums, and walking on the street--and writes her letters of the most respectful devotion. Although Vera knows intuitively that these are the expressions of a true, deep feeling, she cannot regard seriously the love of a man of such a low social position. Then, on her birthday, he sends her a bracelet of garnets set in gold, which belonged to his mother and is his only possession of value. When the news of the gift leaks out to Vera's family and friends, the incident is treated with snobbish scorn. Every means is used to make the clerk feel that he has behaved in an insolent manner, and filled with remorse, he commits suicide. Upon hearing of his death, Vera ignores convention and visits his home.
