Synopsis

Antonio Canova, "Toni," an Italian laborer who has arrived as part of the immigrant influx into Martigues, finds work at a local mine and begins an affair with his landlady, Marie. After several months he tires of their liaison and falls in love with Josepha, a Spanish woman who lives with her father, Sébastian, in the home of a cousin, Gaby. Toni courts Josepha, unaware that the lecherous mine foreman, Albert, is inflamed by her. Although Toni receives permission from Sébastian to marry Josepha, his hope is crushed as Albert rapes her in a ditch. Josepha subsequently marries Albert and bears his child, asking Toni to be the godfather. Following Sébastian's death, Toni leaves Marie and persuades Josepha to run away with him. Gaby persuades Josepha to steal Albert's money to finance her elopement. When Albert surprises her during the theft, she kills him. Gaby leaves for Marseilles, while Toni attempts to dispose of the corpse. Caught by a policeman while burying the body, Toni confesses to the murder and then escapes. While running away he is noticed by a hunter and killed when he refuses to halt. He dies unaware that his beloved has turned herself in to the police.
