Synopsis

Reb Kalman, an enterprising matchmaker who has brought many couples together, is unable to find a husband for his own daughter Libaleh. Reb is hired by the wealthy Pinchas'l, who is anxious to find a husband for his daughter Caroline. Caroline is in love with her tutor, Max, but Pinchas'l wants her to marry someone from the upper class. Reb matches Caroline with Kouny-Lemel, a simpleton from the next village. Max, who bears a striking resemblance to Kouny-Lemel, secretly continues his courtship of Caroline. Their identities become so confused that in the end the parents allow Caroline to marry Max, and the matchmaker's daughter winds up with Kouny-Lemel.
