Synopsis
Columbia University student Stanley Sweetheart meets Cathy during a language class and invites her to his apartment where she is at first shocked by his sloppiness, his antipathy towards his mother, and his pornographic underground movies. Cathy resists Stanley's initial attempt at seduction, stating that she is a virgin, but later she relents. Several days later, Cathy introduces Stanley to her plump roommate Fran, and he offers to make Fran the star of his next film. After a short filming session, Fran seduces him, and in the following weeks, Stanley is besieged by both Cathy and Fran. Seeking advice, he goes to see his hippie friend Danny, who advises him to adopt a carefree lifestyle. One evening, Danny and his bisexual friends Shayne and Andrea visit Stanley and Cathy, and they all smoke marijuana--Cathy, for the first time. A few days later, Cathy decides to leave him because his feelings for her are based only on sex. Stanley then takes Danny's advice and tries to fill the void left by Cathy with drugs and sex. At a party, he sees her, and she tells him that she has a more fulfilling relationship with Danny. Stanley then begins an affair with Shayne and Andrea, but after two weeks of group sex and drugs, Stanley realizes that neither woman can substitute for Cathy, and he decides to leave them.
