Synopsis
Dr. Glas, an elderly, nearly blind physician in Stockholm, reflects on the tragic events that influenced his lonely and empty life: During the final years of the last century, Dr. Glas is consulted by young Helga Gregorius, who complains that the overbearing sexual demands of her husband, a middle-aged pastor, are endangering her physical and mental health. The sexually repressed young doctor, strongly attracted to Helga, begins to have erotic fantasies involving her. In spite of the knowledge that she has a secret lover, he attempts to help her by advising her husband that continued sexual intercourse is inimical to her health. This warning does not for long deter the pastor, who invokes God as his authority for continuing to exercise his "marital rights." Helga again seeks help from the doctor in avoiding her husband's excesses. Dr. Glas, whose idealistic medical ethics have in the past caused him to reject abortion and euthanasia, dreams of murdering the pastor and agonizes over his decision. He gives the pastor a drug which he knows will prove fatal, rationalizing the deed as a necessary move to save Helga's life. Afterwards he finds himself unable to distinguish his dreams and fantasy from reality. Having grown old alone, Dr. Glas is haunted by doubts as to the motive for his crime.
