Synopsis
From the window of her Paris apartment, Constance, a lonely 38-year-old widow, is able to observe the promiscuous behavior of a young starlet who lives across the courtyard. One night Constance hears a violent quarrel and looks out of her window in time to see the starlet being strangled by her lover. When the man, Hugo, pleads with her for mercy, Constance allows him to hide in her apartment, and soon she becomes his mistress. She is then blackmailed by a night watchman who knows she is harboring a murderer. After being forced to pay out almost all of her savings, Constance learns that the starlet is still alive and that the murder was part of a blackmail plot conceived by Hugo, the watchman, and the starlet. Humiliated and outraged, she plans her revenge. After indicating to Hugo that she has received more blackmail letters than he knows about, Constance convinces him that he is being doublecrossed by his accomplices. Furthermore, she uses photographs to suggest to Hugo that the starlet has another lover. Her strategy works; Hugo is driven to such jealousy that he strangles the starlet.
