Synopsis

Victoria, an English nurse, Caterina, her Italian colleague, and Jane, a secretary from Canada [France?], find themselves sharing a lifeboat with Patrick, a French war correspondent, after the Red Cross ship in which they were returning from Korea is sunk. They land on a small volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, and conflicting passions soon come into play. Rebuffed by the cold Victoria, Patrick becomes romantically involved with the innocent Caterina, who loves him but refuses to become physically intimate. The carnal Jane bids for his attentions, and they carry on a sexual relationship. After the departure of Caterina, who leaves in the patched lifeboat to find help and is drowned in a storm, it is revealed by Victoria that Jane is a psychopath whom she was escorting back to face a murder charge. Victoria, too, becomes intimate with Patrick, and the possessive Jane kills her by pushing her off a cliff. When a boat is seen on the horizon, Jane, unable to keep Patrick from signaling for help, jumps from a cliff to her death.
