Synopsis

Jacob Bauer, a rich farmer, is unhappy that his wife is sterile. Unknown to him, his maid Rosalie is raped and becomes pregnant by Marko, a farmhand who deserts her when she suggests marriage. Rosalie goes to her mother's home, gives birth to a son, and returns to Jacob, whose wife has died. Pleased with her work, Jacob proposes marriage; she hesitates because of her illegitimate child, but later accepts, keeping her secret. Jacob soon begins to torment her for not having a child by him. During a violent quarrel, she declares that it is he who is sterile, revealing that she has already borne a child. Humbled, Jacob adopts the boy.
