Synopsis

Young secretary Sharon Carlin is traveling by train from Los Angeles to San Francisco on an errand for her employer Milo Seymour when she is knocked unconscious in her sleeping compartment. Upon awakening, Sharon is questioned by plainclothesman Joe Brady, who suspects her of murdering her female companion in the sleeping compartment. Joe takes Sharon into his custody, and they leave the train at the next stop; but Sharon escapes and is picked up by motorist Paul Colbert, a naturalized citizen from France, who consents to help her. Arriving home in Los Angeles, Sharon discovers the body of Keith Burgess, a drunken writer friend to whom she had lent her apartment for the weekend. Terrified, Sharon tells Paul her true identity, relates to him the recent happenings, and admits that she was a patient in a mental hospital. Though he doubts her, Paul takes her to see her employer Milo Seymour. Initially cordial, Milo denies having sent Sharon to San Francisco, and Sharon soon finds herself framed by Milo in a conspiracy. His plan was to murder his wife, blame Sharon as a homicidal maniac, and finally kill Sharon and make it appear as if she had committed suicide. Paul traces Sharon to Milo's mountain retreat, where she has been taken to be murdered, rescues her, and brings Milo and his associates to justice.
