Synopsis

Boehnke, the boss of a factory in West Germany, is forced to close his business due to financial difficulties. In a series of vignettes, the private lives of some of the unemployed workers are examined. Frida Binder, the cleaning woman who secretly lives rent-free at the plant, is reunited with cashier Herbert Klein after 30 years; the office telephone girl is having a romance with publicist Gerhard Scholz; and Ernie Lauer, the office secretary, spends a day with the plant engineer. One of the former employees commits suicide, and although it is not directly linked to the closing, Boehnke is persuaded by his daughter Paula to reopen the factory.
