Mainz, 1913. Amid the carnival festivities several days before Ash Wednesday, a man, later identified as Ferdinand Bäumler, is found murdered in the cathedral. Police Detective Merzbecher investigates several persons: Panezza, the carnival prince and guilt-ridden father of the illegitimate Ferdinand; Panezza's niece Viola, who later confesses her involvement in the crime; a soldier whose uniform Ferdinand was wearing; and Katharina, the carnival princess with whom Ferdinand was hopelessly in love.
