Synopsis

Budding poet and philosopher Kahlil Gibran, despite his solitary preoccupations, falls in love with Selma Karamy, the beautiful daughter of the wealthy Ferris Affandi Karamy. Unfortunately, Selma's father has already been persuaded to marry her to a bishop's nephew, Mansour Bey Galib, and the two lovers are forced to part. Five years of marriage to her drunken, gambling, lecherous husband oppress the fragile Selma, and a reunion with Gibran reveals the continued strength of their love. Romantic meetings in the moonlight are all that are left the couple, however, as Selma determines to remain faithful to her husband, despite his philandering with a nightclub dancer. Finally Selma's prayers for a child are answered, but she dies after giving birth to a son. Gibran is left grief-stricken and soon leaves Beirut for New York City's Greenwich Village.
