Synopsis

Matsuko lives alone with her father in Kamakura, her mother having deserted them to live with a younger man. Although Matsuko has been in love only once--with Munehiro, who is now married--she is satisfied to live a quiet, solitary life. She meets Munehiro while he is convalescing from a serious illness and discovers that he is still in love with her and wishes to renew their affair, despite his jealous wife. The situation is further complicated when his younger brother, Koji, comes to care for Matsuko. However, her father dies and Munehiro, depressed over his illness, commits suicide. Although Matsuko is now drawn to Koji, her experiences have made her feel inadequate to express her emotions.
