Synopsis

Thomas Ritter, an unknown composer, meets and marries Melanie, a wealthy young widow, despite his grave doubts about their social differences. Melanie, a fierce egotist, forbids Thomas to devote himself to his music and his friends; she must be his sole passion. Her efforts to separate Thomas from Sabine, a pretty secretary, cause him to become Sabine's lover. Informed by Thomas that he is seeking a divorce, Melanie simulates a suicide; but Thomas is contemptuous of her theatrics, and Melanie kills herself. Indicted for murder, Thomas must persuade a jury of his innocence and confront his own feelings of remorse.
