Synopsis

Sanshiro Sugata, a student of Kodokan judo, is on his way to Tokyo when he saves a beautiful woman from death in a dynamite explosion. The woman is Kaori, the daughter of Okakura, martial arts advisor to the Tokyo police. In Tokyo, Sanshiro enrolls in the Kodokan judo school and demonstrates his new throw. Shogoro Yano, the instructor at the school, warns Sanshiro that the throw could be lethal, especially since there is no corresponding defense. Sanshiro not only loses favor with Yano for fighting with rival jujitsu students but also with Okakura, who believes that Kodokan judo is a perverted form of jujitsu. The romance between Sanshiro and Kaori is threatened by Himon, the leading jujitsu man, who covets Okakura's position. Himon kills Okakura's first successor, but his intrigues are discovered when Okakura appoints Yano for the position. In a symbolic clash of the two schools of martial arts, Sanshiro and Himon fight a duel, and Sanshiro wins both the fight and the hand of Kaori.
