Synopsis

During World War II, the Nazis set up a Jewish concentration camp in Terezín, a ghetto in southeast Germany. There are no gas chambers in the compound, and the prisoners handle their own administration and run small businesses. Underneath the comparative serenity, however, is the ever-present struggle of the oppressed; anti-fascist posters are secretly printed and pasted on the walls, and the chairman of the Council of Jewish Elders refuses to sign a list of Jews scheduled for transport because he knows that they are destined for Auschwitz. Consequently, the chairman is put in prison, and the Germans find a more cooperative successor. After the capture of a rebellious smithy worker, the final preparations for the transport are concluded. Hundreds of prisoners are herded together and lined up at a railroad siding. Still unaware that their stay at the camp was merely a waiting period before being sent to the gas chambers, they save places for their loved ones and remain in formation until they are placed aboard the train--bound for Auschwitz.
