Synopsis

In 18th-century Japan Yohei, the son of a merchant, takes money from his father's shop in order to court Kogiku, a geisha whose wealthy patron proves to be too much competition for the young man. Desperate for revenge, Yohei is disgraced when his attack on the patron accidentally soils a passing samurai. Now Yohei's creditors demand that he pay his debts, and after his parents refuse to help him, he turns to Okichi, the wife of a fellow trader. As he is pleading to her for aid, his parents arrive at her shop with some money, but the sum is still insufficient. When Okichi refuses to give him more money, the desperate Yohei stabs her to death.
