Synopsis
Marcela, a bored student living an idle life in the Uruguayan summer resort of Punta del Este, receives an unexpected visit from her grandmother, Joujou, a once-famous courtesan, and Joujou's wealthy lover, Albert. The old woman tells Marcela that if she will consent to brighten up the last days of Albert's young son Martin, who is dying of an incurable disease, she will be rewarded with a year in Paris and a new Dior wardrobe. Marcela consents, although she feels an aversion for Martin and has rejected his advances in the past. Weak and gaunt, Martin arrives with his domineering servants, Adela and Marcos. As time passes, Martin begins to forget his weakness and gains strength with the growing love he feels for Marcela. On the morning Marcela has planned to take Martin shopping with her, Adela seduces him. Later, with renewed vigor, Martin persuades Marcela to make love, and the following weeks are spent in idyllic romps on the beach. Towards the end of the summer, Martin returns from a medical examination with the news that he has been miraculously cured by Marcela's love and now wishes to marry her. Confused by this unexpected turn of events, Marcela tells Martin bluntly that she does not love him and confesses the pact she made with her grandmother. Shattered, Martin commits suicide. Although she is rewarded for keeping her part of the bargain, Marcela feels depressed by Martin's death, and she breaks down and weeps.
