Synopsis
Andrea Marcocci, an aging but proud railroad engineer, is the idol of his young son Sandrino. The rest of the family, however, finds Andrea difficult to get along with. Although the family frequently engages in bitter arguments, Andrea would rather drink and play the guitar than discuss matters of importance. Andrea forces his daughter Giulia to marry the man whose child she is expecting, though Giulia knows that the man does not love her. She loses the baby and takes up with another man. Shaken when his train kills a suicide, Andrea drives through a red light. As a result, he is removed from his job on the passenger train and demoted to driving a freight train. Andrea loses all his friends by taking a train out on the regular schedule during an official strike, and he quits work. Meanwhile, the family situation deteriorates: Marcello, the elder son, and Giulia are thrown out of the house, and even Sandrino is taken to the police station for throwing a rock through the window of Giulia's boyfriend's car. Andrea, now out of work and friendless, finds solace in Sandrino's good performance in school. The two visit the pub where in former days Andrea enjoyed drinking. Unprepared for the welcome he receives from his old friends, Andrea suffers a serious stroke. The family gathers to celebrate Christmas, and reconciliations seem to be near, but Andrea, already broken in spirit, dies while playing his guitar.
