Synopsis

Galia, a beautiful and successful window decorator, lives in a penthouse apartment on the Paris Left Bank. Proud of her independence, she drifts from one love affair to another, guided only by the principle of pleasure. One night she rescues a woman from drowning in the Seine and brings her to her apartment. The woman, Nicole, reveals that she attempted suicide because of her opportunistic and unfaithful husband, Greg. Although Galia agrees to recover the suicide note Nicole left her husband, she decides to leave it in its place as a just punishment for such a man. Nicole is curious as to how the note will affect Greg, and Galia begins spying on him, which eventually leads to a meeting. Despite her awareness that he is unscrupulous, Galia cannot prevent herself from falling in love with him, and he takes her on a trip to Venice. She becomes his mistress, despite Nicole's warnings. Greg at last reveals his wife's suicide and explains that she had refused the divorce he desired. Then, one morning, Galia sees Nicole and Greg deep in conversation in a park. Later she confronts Greg, and he admits to having known all the time that his wife was alive. The reason he gives for meeting Nicole was to continue his plea for a divorce, which she refused, and he suggests that the only alternative is to arrange for her death. Shocked, but still unable to reject him, Galia returns to her apartment. She finds that Nicole has left, and sensing disaster, she telephones Greg. Nicole answers and calmly announces that she has killed Greg so that he could not ruin Galia's life as he ruined hers.
