Synopsis
Billa and Ginnie, two nightclub hostesses who find refuge from their public lives in the London flat they share, grow to depend on each other for emotional stability. (Ginnie is a capricious extrovert, freely attracted to men, while Billa is older and vulnerable beneath her cynical facade.) Embittered by her own failure to achieve satisfying relationships with men, Billa grows disturbed at Ginnie's involvement with Bob Shelbourne, a father-dominated young business tycoon estranged from his socialite wife, Elizabeth. Ginnie insists that, to prove his sincerity, Bob find a position for her in the family business, and Bob is openly defiant for the first time when his father sarcastically offers the position of "hostess" to his firm's clients. Meanwhile, Billa's weak but well-meaning father, a country schoolmaster, arrives for a visit. All affection having faded, Billa's attempt to confide goes awry, and she deliberately tries to shock him with details of her life. When he leaves, she tearfully confesses to Ginnie that she is pregnant. Refusing to abandon her friend, Ginnie puts aside plans of a trip to the Bahamas with Bob. Having broken with his wife at last, Bob tries to convince Ginnie to leave with him, but she drunkenly dismisses his protestations of love and vulgarly taunts him. Alone at the flat, Ginnie bungles an attempt at suicide, and both women conclude that their only chance for future happiness is with each other.
