Synopsis

In August, 1947, a hunted man seeks refuge at a cottage on a lonely stretch of land along the North Sea. The sole occupant of the cottage is a stoic woman who feeds the stranger and allows him to sleep by the hearth. The stranger, taking note of the woman's lonely isolation, stays on the next day, and the woman tells him of her life alone in the cottage ever since the day 3 years earlier when her husband, a member of the Danish resistance, was murdered by collaborators. As the man prolongs his stay at the cottage, the woman awakens to his physical presence, and they become lovers. Then one night as they consummate their passion, the woman notices that the man bears a scar shaped like an animal's mouth on his arm. It is a mark that could belong to only one man--the quisling responsible for torturing and executing her husband. Horrified, she taunts the stranger, wrings a confession of guilt from him, and shoots him as he tries to escape. Now aware that she has erased the man's guilt by slaying him, she bears within herself the even greater guilt of murder.
