Synopsis
A documentary on Africa from a sensational point of view: The large sums of money to be gained in hunting wild animals encourage Africans to engage in poaching, thereby endangering many species. Elephants are slaughtered for their tusks, rhinoceros for their horns, and antelope for meat. Hunters with another purpose undertake the dangerous mission of trapping wild animals for shipment to zoos. Others hunt poisonous snakes, which are "milked" for the manufacture of antivenin. Meanwhile, tribesmen driven further into the interior preserve ancient ways of life. Members of one tribe drink a mixture of cow's blood, urine, and ashes. A man is photographed with his 49 wives and 212 children. Pygmies, resisting the encroachments of technology, perform joyful songs and dances. On a remote island, witch doctors perform trephination without the use of antiseptic procedures or anesthetics and achieve a 96% success record. Another tribe holds an annual fertility rite in which the most beautiful female child to reach puberty is burned alive as a sacrifice. The ceremony is performed under the influence of bang, a narcotic derived from cannabis.
