Synopsis

John Carter, London man-about-town, meets Samantha at a Chelsea discotheque, and, at her suggestion, they return to her flat for the night. After going for cigarettes, John returns to the apartment to find that Samantha has been murdered in her bathroom. He fears implication and decides not to call the police when he discovers evidence that Samantha was using drugs. The next day he is summarily dismissed by Hornsby-Smith, his supervisor, and he returns home to find three hoodlums and a woman playing strip poker in his flat. They beat him up for a large gambling debt they claim he owes. Next, he is blackmailed into taking a trip to Brighton with a frightened young woman, Karen. The blackmailer, Mendez, has two of his gang, Cathy and Jane, photograph John and Karen and record their exact measurements. John seduces Cathy and learns that he and Karen are to be murdered and their identities assumed by a deported gangster and his wife who are being smuggled back into England. John, Cathy, and Karen escape, but Cathy is shot by the pursuing gangsters. During the climactic gun battle between the police and Mendez' gang, John learns that Hornsby-Smith is the evil force behind his plight, and that Samantha's death was a hoax intended to facilitate his blackmail. John and Karen return to London together.
