Synopsis

The glamour of Paris attracts Barbara, Lena and Marianne, three Swedish girls, to the city. Barbara and Lena are roommates in a run-down building. Short of funds and in debt for rent because her parents stopped her allowance when she neglected her studies, Barbara poses nude for an art class. She goes to bed with a young Frenchman who leaves her after a brief affair. Lena loses her job as a babysitter and seeks help from her friend, Marianne, who is unable to aid her. Determined to remain in Paris under any conditions, Lena accepts a job in a laundry. When she returns home in the evening she finds that Barbara has spent what little money they had on a scarf to hide a bruise on her neck that was inflicted by her lover. Furious, Lena goes for a walk, meets some jazz musicians, and goes dancing with them. This is the Paris she loves. Meanwhile, Marianne and her French lover, who have been eking out a living pasting up posters, decide to leave the city for a new life in the country. Barbara, also disillusioned, leaves Paris--as yet another Swedish girl arrives in the city of dreams.
