Synopsis
The Hunt family, consisting of two brothers and two sisters, lives on a declining Virginia plantation during the 1860's. Jonah, the eldest and owner of the plantation, spends most of his time in the local sporting house; brother Jason is a drunkard; Lee is the mentally retarded, promiscuous "little sister"; and Rachel, ambitious, dreams of becoming the plantation's sole owner. To effect her plan, Rachel hires New Orleans prostitute Lorna to seduce Jonah and lure him away from the plantation. Rachel's scheme runs afoul when Lee is "raped" by Cogswell, the field boss, and Jason is killed in a duel to defend Lee's honor. Jonah locks himself in his room and drinks himself to death, and Rachel murders Cogswell and Lorna when she finds them in bed together in the whorehouse. The family honor restored, Rachel returns home only to find that the plantation has been seized by the Confederate Army: she goes insane and kills herself.
