Synopsis

Shortly after a child murderer escapes from a mental hospital, a young laborer calls at a strange house in search of water and a place to rest. There he is befriended by Hazel Ashley, an emotionally disturbed adolescent who leads him to a hayloft of a nearby barn. Hazel and the stranger talk, and she attempts unsuccessfully to persuade him to take her away from her unhappy home. Hazel's absence is noticed, and a group of townspeople led by Major Peters, a local squire, track her to the barn. The local police prevent Peters from entering the barn, and a hospital official searches the building. Hazel and the stranger hide themselves well, however, and the official can't find them. The mob disperses, and Hazel again asks the stranger to take her away with him. The townspeople find new evidence that the couple is in the barn, and they return later that night. The girl becomes terrified and rips her blouse while running from the barn. The stranger runs after her and is shot and wounded by Major Peters. A police inspector arrives on the scene and informs the mob that the escaped child murderer had been apprehended earlier that evening.
