Synopsis

During the sixth century in the Northern Italian Alpine foothills [the Julian Alps, according to an Italian source], Kovo, the cruel chief of the village of Rutar, rapes and kills the woman betrothed to Toryok, chief of the neighboring village of Nyssia. Kovo flees, joining the Longobard hordes in their attack on Italy, and returns to Rutar 2 years later with Lianora, a lovely Veronese hostage. Toryok aids the captive in escaping before leading his men in attacking Rutar and burning the village to the ground. Kovo retaliates by leading the Longobards in an attack on Nyssia, but he is driven back. After Toryok kills Kovo in single combat and the Longobards retreat, he marries Lianora.
