Synopsis
Using authentic Russian, German, and British newsreel footage, the film traces the origins and rise of the Nazi party under the leadership of Adolf Hitler and his principal lieutenants, Hermann Göring, Joseph Goebbels, and Heinrich Himmler. In 1945, Göring heads the prisoners in the dock at the Nuremberg trials. Among the other defendants whose activities are detailed are Julius Streicher, Rudolf Hess, Wilhelm Keitel, and Karl Dönitz. American chief prosecutor Robert Houghwout Jackson reads the three main charges--crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity--and they are documented in succession. German-made films depicting scenes of mass murder and concentration camp brutalities are intercut with reaction shots of the prisoners in the dock. Other footage shows Nazis massacring American soldiers at Malmédy and killing hostages as frightened citizens look on. Detailed documentation of mass exterminations, torture of Jewish prisoners, and corpses piled at concentration camps at Belsen, Buchenwald, and Dachau substantiate the charge of crimes against humanity, for which the prisoners were convicted. The history of the Nuremberg trials ends with the hanging of several of the war criminals.
