Synopsis
Anna, a 36-year-old divorcée with two children, has an affair with 21-year-old Erik, one of the students in the ballet school where she teaches. That summer, Anna takes her children to a cottage by the sea, and Erik visits when he is not helping his father wash taxicabs. Anna's former husband, who deserted her and the children, appears in a new American car and, claiming to have car trouble, spends the night. The next day Erik fixes the car and goes fishing with Anna's son. The ex-husband demands that Anna return to him. They argue and Anna flees when he tries to rape her. Erik, believing that Anna and her ex-husband have been reconciled, drinks too much, takes a swim, and nearly drowns. When he returns to the cottage and finds Anna still gone, he packs his bags and leaves. Anna arrives back at the cottage and thinks Erik has deserted her. Sometime later, Anna discovers that she is pregnant and, with the help of a girl friend, obtains an abortion. Anna calls a friend for comfort; the friend calls Erik, who rushes to Anna. Although they are reunited, it is not certain whether their love will last.
