Synopsis
Henrike Steen, a middle-aged real estate agent of comfortable means, looks to the family maid and secretary, Frau Jacobsen, for relief from the monotony of his marriage. His placid family life is disturbed one day by Per, an arrogant youth who invades the Steens' private beach and captivates their daughter, Susanne. Per and Susanne begin an affair, and Per invites himself to a party given for Susanne by her parents. Per offends the Steens by proclaiming his belief in hedonism, and he gives Susanne a book of pornography. Mr. Steen burns the book in the fireplace, and Per retaliates by burning the family Bible. Unable to combat Per's influence over his daughter, Mr. Steen invites him to become a houseguest so that Susanne may learn for herself that Per is a worthless boor. Per, also a fledgling pornographer, moves in with his filmmaking paraphernalia. He continues his relationship with Susanne, propositions her mother, and proceeds to make sex films. Per shows one of his films to Mrs. Steen; her interest turns to shock as she discovers her daughter fornicating on the screen. Frantic, she calls her husband, who beats up the youth and throws him out, leaving the Steen family with its ever-widening generation gap.
