Synopsis

Ivan Degtyaryov, a good-hearted ex-sailor who leads a construction team building a Moscow housing project, befriends Borya, a free-spirited young boy whose mischief frequently leads to trouble. Borya destroys Ivan's flowerbed, and afterwards Ivan has a heart-to-heart talk with the boy, recruiting him as a helper. Misfortune has befallen Borya's sister, Liza, who is about to give birth to a baby fathered by Pavel Sakharov, a member of Ivan's construction crew, who has jilted her. Pavel's perfidious behavior is sternly condemned by the other members of the crew, and Ivan feels a deep concern for Liza's plight. He tenderly courts her and with tact and understanding helps her to overcome her despair. Liza returns his love, and, beginning a life together, they move into the newly-completed housing.
