Synopsis

Joniko, a 12-year-old Alaskan, has been trained in the ways of his Tlingit tribe. When a geologist whom he has been guiding falls and injures his leg, Joniko sets out in a canoe to find his father, who departed the day before for northern seal grounds. During his journey through various animal domains, Joniko confronts grizzly bears, giant sperm whales, and an Alaskan brown bear. After entering the great sea of ice, Joniko, afraid of legendary evil demons, conquers Kush Ta Ka, the spirit of man's fear. The adolescent finds his father and returns with him to save the geologist.
