Synopsis

Nikolay Savelyev, a Soviet soldier, is seriously wounded and blinded in one of the final skirmishes with the Germans in World War II. Svetlana, his nurse, who is in love with him, takes him home to his wife and family in the town where he had been a schoolteacher before the war. Nikolay learns braille at the school where he formerly taught, but his return to civilian life is beset with problems. His marriage is now unhappy, and although he resumes his job, he leaves his class when a student takes advantage of his blindness to cheat. Despairing, Nikolay discovers that Koren, the new school principal, who calls for his dismissal, is the cowardly deserter responsible for his wartime disability. Nikolay feels a renewed responsibility to his students and pursues his idealistic commitment to teaching. Having parted from his wife, he is reunited with Svetlana, who has remained in the town to be near him.
