Synopsis
Five-year-old Sandu sets out to follow the sun around the earth. He rolls his hoop around his city and looks at the world through pieces of tinted glass. He finds himself at the maternity hospital and discovers how people are born. He becomes friendly with a shoeshine man whose chief passion in life is soccer; then notices that the man has no legs, having lost them in the war. In a park Sandu meets a young woman newly arrived in the city who works as a gardener. She tends roses and peonies, and in a corner of the flower bed grows a sunflower, which reminds her of her home and childhood. She tells Sandu how the sunflower turns its head to follow the sun. The parkkeeper cuts the flower down, and Sandu struggles with evil for the first time in his life. The boy dines with some good-natured young builders, encounters a passing funeral, meets the driver of a huge truck, and watches gymnasts at a stadium. When night falls, Sandu falls asleep against a stone lion. In his dream, the parkkeeper solemnly buries the sunflower and becomes a lifeless dummy; and the shoeshine man, having found his legs, takes Sandu into a beautiful street to meet the sun. In the morning, a military musician finds Sandu and takes him home.
