Synopsis
A United States Air Force plane accidentally detonates a nuclear bomb over Korea. While South Korea insists that North Korea set off the explosion, the North Koreans protest U. S. violation of the 38th Parallel. In Japan, the U. S. 7th Fleet mobilizes at Yokosuko. A broadcast from Peking reports that an American U-3 jet has been shot down over the Soviet Union. As Tokyo mobilizes its civil defense units, newspaperman Shigeo reports on the growing crisis, while his sweetheart, Tomoko, a nurse, prepares to care for casualties. Negotiations between the U. S. and the U.S.S.R. break down, and Moscow warns Tokyo that every Japanese airbase will be destroyed by H-bombs within minutes. At dawn, Tokyo lies in ruins, completely destroyed by nuclear weapons. Shigeo returns to the city looking for Tomoko but finds that she has been killed; he then dies from exposure to radiation. In Argentina, the only country to survive total devastation, a memorial service is held for mankind.
