Synopsis

Upon the death of Mazarin in 1661 Louis XIV ascends the throne of France. Contrary to expectations the king immediately consolidates his power, denies his mother a place on the privy council, arrests Minister of Finance Nicolas Fouquet, appoints in his stead the incorruptible Colbert, and moves his court from Paris to Versailles, thereby separating the nobility from its power base. At court he further distracts the aristocracy by devising sumptuous fashions, lavish banquets, extravagant entertainments and elaborate rituals celebrating his exalted position, and by encouraging rivalry and intrigue. In middle age the king contemplates his royal isolation.
