Synopsis

An art school selects its models from a group of elderly pensioners who arrive each day seeking work either because they are bored or because they want to earn a little extra money. Hanzlik, a very old man, is chosen, and the young students contemplate his face as he sits and dozes. An elderly woman who is interested in Hanzlik tries to persuade a student to remove the moustache from his bust of Hanzlik because she has been trying to convince Hanzlik that he would look younger without it; but Hanzlik prefers to keep his moustache, even if it means losing his lady friend. The next day Vránová, a young woman who arrives with her baby, is asked to pose in the nude. Her jealous husband later arrives and destroys the students' work. Vránová returns the next day in defiance of her husband, only to find that her services are no longer required because Vosta, a middle-aged, temporarily unemployed coalman who is recovering from an injury, has been selected to pose as a wounded soldier. Vosta learns of the nude modeling that takes place at the school and returns there at night with two of his cronies in the hope of secretly watching the models. Irritated because they cannot see anything, they go off to get drunk in a nearby bar and to complain about being middle-aged.
