Synopsis

Maria, a young American living and working in Rome, shares an apartment with Berenice, a young Englishwoman who aspires to a film career, and Ingrid, an introspective Swede studying voice. Maria and Berenice give private English lessons as a source of income and in order to meet Italian men; and Maria develops an intimate romance with Marco, one of the students. While Maria pursues her fascination with the surface of Roman life, Marco attempts to introduce her to life as it really is among his people. Though she continues to seek other sexual conquests, Maria strives to maintain her relationship with Marco. She creates a jealous scene with Berenice in Marco's presence when she discovers them talking together, and when she returns late one night to find that Berenice has been assaulted by one of her students, she evicts her. Maria then locks Ingrid out of the apartment one night and allows her to enter the following morning only to collect her belongings. Sarah, another American, stays briefly with Maria, and they develop a tender affection for each other, but Sarah becomes homesick and decides to return to America. With Marco away on a business trip, Maria is picked up by a stranger one evening during a walk by the Tiber River. When the man brings her home late that night, Marco is waiting for her, and Maria quickly takes leave of her escort. Marco angrily slaps Maria and tells her that he had come to ask her to marry him. Though he excuses her behavior, their relationship is again threatened when Maria presumptuously asks him whether they should return to America by boat or plane. Marco, resentful at being shipped off to another country, declares that if Maria wants to be his wife she must decide to remain in Italy with his people. She is unable to answer and Marco departs, leaving Maria, stunned, alone.
