Synopsis

Peter, an awkward and sensitive young man from a small Ontario mining town, enters the University of Toronto, but he is slow to make friends because of his shyness. He is befriended by Doug, a popular senior, who prides himself on his urban sophistication. Their tentative relationship eventually grows into a strong friendship. Doug's steady girl friend, Bev, is puzzled by the attachment, unable to understand what common bonds unite the two. Slowly gaining confidence and coming out of his inordinate dependence on Doug, Peter joins a campus drama group and strikes up a friendship with an older student, Sandra. Without knowing why, Doug resents Peter's new interest and begins to nag him, until finally, after Peter spends a night with Sandra, Doug punches him in the stomach and storms off. Doug in the end must reconcile himself to the fact that his protégé and intimate friend no longer needs him.
