Synopsis

Pierre, a young Parisian, is looking for spiritual contact with God, and in the process he has tried to cut himself off from external pursuits and temptations. His past unfolds: as a penniless youth he wandered through Paris--along the boulevards between La Bastille and the Place de la République; around Les Halles; through St. Germain; near the Place St. Michel. He also explored elements of Western religion and Eastern mysticism, meanwhile seeking meaning in sexual experiences. He now becomes involved with Anka, a Danish woman, but though Anka becomes pregnant Pierre leaves her to isolate himself in a room where he pursues his Karma and explores the concept of reincarnation. He experiences hallucinations during this period and finally is led to accept a compromise that allows him to embrace life and love. His belief in reincarnation remains while he looks forward with Anka to the birth of a child.
