Synopsis
Gaunt, a wandering stranger who carries a Bible, passes a farm at the instant Ted, the farmer's son, kills Marie, a black servant, in an attempted rape. The farmer, Link, arrives on the scene, blames the murder on the stranger, and orders Ted to shoot both Gaunt and little Jesse, Marie's mute son. When Ted hesitates, Gaunt and Jesse take flight, but Link and Cal, a sheriff, join in pursuit. Ted and Gaunt emerge face to face in the woods, and in the ensuing struggle Ted is killed. Subsequently, Link wounds Gaunt, who that night, in an agonized delirium, relives his role as a member of the crew who dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima. Jesse brings a doctor to tend Gaunt's wounds. When the doctor tells them that he intends to take Jesse back with him, the man and boy embrace, but Link catches sight of them and shoots Gaunt dead. The sheriff shoots Link before he can kill Jesse, and the boy sobs bitterly, uttering his first sounds.
