Synopsis

The construction of the Kariba Dam on the Zambesi River drives a large number of inhabitants from their homeland. Relocated in an unfamiliar area where their fishing livelihood is threatened by crocodiles and hippos, one tribe begins illegally to trap protected wild animals. The Rhodesian government appeals for help to Bill Carpenter, an American hunter, who arrives with his young assistant, Mississippian Roy Hurst, to capture the crocodiles and move them away from the natives' fishing waters; frighten the hippos away from the crops; and stop the poaching of wild animals. The Americans are joined by Peter Hankins, a Rhodesian guide and white hunter, and Francis Lindsey, a South African who acts as overseer. Lindsey's harsh treatment of the natives nearly excites a rebellion and almost causes Lindsey and Hurst to come to blows. Despite these difficulties, Carpenter and his crew succeed in their mission, but in carrying out their assignment, the group survive a number of terrifying crises, including encounters with man-eating crocodiles and wounded, charging elephants.
