Synopsis

Douglas Baines, an army deserter employed at a garage, lives with Daisy Hacker and their son Jiffy. Baines buys his son a doll, only to find that Daisy has given the boy up for adoption. He strangles her when she refuses to tell him where the boy is and runs, taking the doll as a reminder of his son. The police cannot catch him, but they do learn about the doll. Five years later, Baines is the manager of a garage and is planning to marry his secretary, Janet Greenway. Janet discovers his obsession for the doll and asks him for it. While she is on vacation, Baines, needing the doll again, breaks into her apartment, unaware that the place has already been burgled. During questioning about the burglary, Detective Ranson mentions Jiffy; and Baines is caught for the murder he committed years before.
